Street Photography

Elliott Erwitt once said that photography “has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

Although much of my professional life occurs in the realm of words, the way I see is reflected in everything I do. I especially love the improvisational freedom of street photography — it’s serendipitous, composed in the moment, an exercise in constant awareness and endless surprise.

Join me as I explore the geometry of spaces and the people who move through them.

A long-exposure image of Grand Central Station. Amid the blur of bodies, a young woman stands still beside a pram.

Grand Central

Light shines through window shutters on a dark night. A menorah is lit in a lower window.

Sixth Night

Bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and saxophonist Marco Eneidi in performance. Lisa’s face is framed by the instruments and a stage light’s glow.

Marco Eneidi & Lisa Mezzacappa

Abstract composition of netting, wood, water, and reeds.

Morro Bay Pier

Stark black-and-white image of structural supports and girders

Third Street Bridge

Inverted image with an old office building at the top and intricate clouds in a bright blue sky below.

Sky Over Kearny Street

A shadowed figure on a city sidewalk. Letters reflected from a shop window appear to float from the person's head.

Secret Language

A lonely subway platform. On an escalator, a man carrying heavy bags rises toward the light.

Glen Park Escalator

A woman sits on angled steps. Shadows create the illusion of piano keys.

Arpeggio

Abstract streaks of light on a metallic surface create a faux landscape in shades of brass and gold.

Mills Morning

A pigeon flies between two office towers, towards a flare of sunlight.

Soar

Moody photograph of the International Terminal at San Francisco International Airport. No people are visible.

Terminal

A protestor in a rain poncho occupies a crosswalk as others pass by.

This Is Our City

A carved angel, in a posture of mourning, is visible through a small window. Marble textures and cyan tones further set the funereal mood.

Blue Angel

Street scene: A man in a business suit with no visible face passes a print of a face plastered to a metal box. Graffiti reading "HAHA" is above the printed face.

HAHA

Two people stand at an intersection. The man on the left wears a dark suit and is in rigid alignment with a line painted on the street, contrasting with the more casual woman on the right.

Angle of Approach

A bridge is reflected in a grid of rectangular windows, shot at an acute angle.

Manhattan Bridge

A dog's head appears the top of a wall. The wall and the sky behind the dog are exactly the same shade of gray, creating an amusing optical illusion: where’s his body?!
